Long-delayed update–2010 progress

2010 has been a busy year. Several new publications out this year, with a handful more to come:

An Overview of Livestock-Associated MRSA in Agriculture, 2010.

Review of Michael Specter’s “Denialism” in EID.

Three others in press that I’ll add as they come out, with 5 additional manuscripts in review and a few others in draft.

Received funding for two federal grants; funds will be rolling in and work will be starting shortly.

Graduated first PhD student in May; second will be defending next month.

Awarded 2 pilot grants to fund research for 2 other PhD students.

Second editions of my books on Group A Strep and Ebola are off at the publisher’s. The former is already out; the latter (which will now encompass Ebola and Marburg) will be out next year.

Working on more grants (always)…hopefully 2011 will be a banner year as well.

As I noted at Aetiology, I have a new paper that will be published in the December issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases. However, it’s already out in the “ahead of print” version here. Fellow Scienceblogger revere also was kind enough to discuss it on his blog.

The first of (hopefully) a trio of upcoming papers is now out. Published today in PLoS Biology, the manuscript discusses the intersection of blogging and academia–and where it may go. Nick has a really good overview, while Bora is keeping track of all of the publicity. (Edit to add: Nick has some additional links, including at the SciAm blog.) The University of Iowa also put out a press release here, and Medical News Today covered it here.

I mentioned that i’ve been submitting grants like a fiend. Well, it’s paid off. We’ve received 3 small grants to fund related projects, so this should keep the samples coming in for another year or so.

So, in the past 6 months I’ve submitted 12 grants (or 13, I’ve lost track), actually had one funded, and started a brand-spankin’-new project examining MRSA and swine:

Preliminary results were presented last week at The International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases in Atlanta.

Meanwhile, 3 manuscripts are currently under review, and 4 more in various stages of draft, with at least 3 more grants by summer. Busy busy busy…
